Why Dance?

This Renaissance, as in ones before, is about revival and light, but also redefining what dance can add to a life well-lived. Within the classical ballet form exists something pure and beautiful. Practice can be a place to go, far from one’s pedestrian thoughts, where the mind is filled with music and movement. Come dance with us and find

Practice can be a place to go, far from one’s pedestrian thoughts, where the mind is filled with music and movement. Come dance with us and find out what moves YOU. A lovely side effect will be the improvement of your posture, strength, bodily awareness and control, and very likely, your mood!

Ballet Renaissance NYC welcomes any adult who would like to dance.

OPEN LEVEL BALLET -- Students have some experience with ballet already. There is barre and a bit of center work. This class is good for retired dancers, folks who have taken ballet many years ago and want to do it again for enjoyment, and for those who take regular class and can do their work at any level.

VINTAGE BALLET and WELLNESS is for those of us who are older and want to move more for our health and well-being. Suzi can work with anyone who wishes to have dance in their life. No age limits. This ballet-influenced class will be with at the barre and some of it in folding chairs. Just bring your fine self and if you need any assistance bring whatever works best for you. I’m using the word vintage to describe us, not the ballet, think of us as fine wine! Do not worry about what you can’t do, this class will explore what you CAN do. (Not on the schedule yet, please inquire.)

SUZI WINSON  is an entrepreneur, art instigator, publisher, editor, writer, performer, educator, and above all a dancer. Suzi's dance life has taken her from classical ballet to Broadway and has informed everything she has ever done or will do! She has been teaching dance for over 20 years.  For the decade before the pandemic, Suzi was the director and co-founder of Circus Warehouse, the premier professional training center for circus art forms in NYC and the only such school that used dance as a daily practice and baseline skill set for circus.  Suzi guided the rise to prominence of the Warehouse worldwide and trained young adults for Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros B&B, Marvel Universe Live, and dozens of entertainment companies, athletic dance troupes, theatrical productions and feature films.

Suzi also performed in a slew of shows/companies, here are a few you might have heard of: Broadway/National Tours: Brigadoon (1980, Agnes DeMille), My One and Only (1982, Tommy Tune), Annie (1981, Peter Gennaro), Nunsense (1985 original cast Ballerina Nun). Other Dance Highlights: Fokine Ballet, Israeli Classical Ballet (contract only 1979), American Dance Machine (Lee Theodore 1977-1980).  Her dance teachers and mentors aside from aforementioned choreographers: Barbara Cole, Melissa Hayden, Luigi, Bobby Blankshine, David Howard, Douglas Wassell, Nenette Charisse, Bob Atwood, Frederico Lazarelli.

These days it's all about teaching adults to recapture their love for dance, to move well and with meaning, and to be part of a sublime lineage.

The histories

PRE-RENAISSANCE, Suzi co-founded and directed CIRCUS WAREHOUSE of NYC (with dancer /circus artist Michelle Arvin), the only professional circus training program in the U.S. that had a ballet-based syllabus for all circus arts forms.  See "about Suzi" section for more about Circus Warehouse.

The PANDEMIC claimed the space among many losses, but the students stuck around and Suzi developed BALLET FOR THE END OF THE WORLD on Zoom and in midtown Manhattan and Long Island City outdoors.

In this strange new world, many people who had found dance previously inaccessible, turned up to nightly online classes to move with meaning to music, to heal from early ballet trauma, and some showed up in sweatpants and socks just to be with friends at a time that was abysmally isolative. Suzi gathered a new following to add to her regulars, and the age-range and disparate dance intentions has made for some sweet times, new and improved body-awareness, a bit of a musical education, and some very good dancing. Class was and still is full of professors, former pro-athletes, aerialists, dance friends of her youth, neighbors, everyone who wanted to learn is welcome to join in. The zoom classes have endured!
